Preview event: live electronic music performance 0xA by Aymeric Mansoux and Chun Lee
Artists and Contributors: Caen Botto (Universomente), Wayne Clements, Geff Cox (for project.arnolfini), Lutz Dammbeck, Jeff Gompertz, Rui Guerra, Linda Hilfling, Chun Lee, Aymeric Mansoux and Marloes de Valk (GOTO10), José Antonio Orts, and selected artists from openKURATOR: Burak Arikan, Bestiario, Carlos Katastrofsky, Abe Linkoln, Jimpunk and Mrtamale, Joseph Nechvatal, Cyril de Vroom and Jos Wabeke.
After The Net is a deliberately ambiguous title: implying that somehow the Net is over in terms of its utopian promises and also making a reference to the documentary film The Net by Lutz Dammbeck (2003). Like the film, the exhibition explores systems of technological control and presents works that draw attention to historical shifts of network power: from cybernetics to free and open source software, and in turn to social networking platforms.
Cybernetics Revisited is a retrospective of the work of the artist José Antonio Orts spanning from 1970s to his most recent work. It includes installations incorporating technological systems and objects ranging from light-sensitive sound circuits and prized toys to interactive light and sound sculptures. Chatroom by Jeff Gompertz in collaboration with Caen Botto (Universomente) is an installation that uses the capture of video-chat input of audience participants to create a hall of mirrors. Hello process by Aymeric Mansoux and Marloes de Valk (GOTO10) demonstrates the open system paradox of a computer running free software where the complexity of the process at run-time remains impenetrable.
Antisocial notworking (curated by Geoff Cox for project.arnolfini) is an online repository of works that explore the pseudo-agency of online social platforms. For the exhibition, three works have been selected: Wayne Clements’s logo_wiki identifies how military, corporate and governmental users are responsible for many thousands of unacknowledged alterations to Wikipedia pages; Linda Hilfling’s Participation 0.0 - part I documents an intervention in Second Life to draw attention to its Terms of the Service; and Rui Guerra’s www_hack allows all visitors to a single web page to observe each others’ mouse movements to demonstrate that the server-client relationship is not free from power structures.
The exhibition also includes openKURATOR, a curatorial online platform developed by KURATOR for Observatori 2008 presenting a selection of online works from an open call: Infomania by Cyril de Vroom & Jos Wabek Hipercontrol^3, Bestiario, Mypocket by Burak Arikan, Netart For Poor People by Carlos Katastrofsky, Triptych.TV by Abe Linkoln, Jimpunk, Mrtamale, and Viral Symph0ny by Joseph Nechvatal.
Taken together, the works in the exhibition explore some of the historical roots of technological open systems in relation to ethics and artistic practice and reactivate some of the founding paradoxes. On the one hand, there is an emphasis on the social promises of global networking and instantaneous communication, and on the other, an emphasis on intrusive systems of technological control. The artists in the exhibition respond through critique, invention and panache.

La exposición también incluye openKURATOR, una selección especial de trabajos online seleccionados a partir de una convocatoria abierta: Burak Arikan, Bestiario, Carlos Katastrofsky, Abe Linkoln, Jimpunk and Mrtamale, Joseph Nechvatal, Cyril de Vroom and Jos Wabeke.
La exposición toma el documental The Net de Lutz Dammbeck (2003) como punto de partida para considerar dos respuestas contrapuestas entre sí a la revolución cibernética. Por un lado hay un énfasis en las promesas utópicas del trabajo en red global y de la comunicación instantánea, y por otro, en los sistemas intrusivos de control tecnológico. Como en el film, la exposición After The Net expone el lado oculto de los avances revolucionarios, las coincidencias y conspiraciones; refleja para ello la arquitectura de los trabajos en red.
La exposición hace hincapié en los cambios históricos del poder del trabajo en red mostrando, por un lado, el Software libre en el que los usuarios controlan a los proveedores y, por otro, las plataformas sociales online, en las cuales los usuarios se someten voluntariamente al poder de la red. Antisocial notworking (curado por Geoff Cox para la project.arnolfini) es un almacén online de proyectos que exploran la pseudo agencia de las plataformas sociales online. Se han seleccionado tres proyectos para Observatori: logo_wiki, de Wayne Clements, identifica cómo militares, empresarios y poderosos son responsables de miles de alteraciones no reconocidas en las páginas de Wikipedia; Participation 0.0 - part I, de Linda Hilfling, documenta una intervención en Second Life centrándose en sus Términos de Servicio; www_hack, de Rui Guerra, permite a los visitantes visitar una página web para observar los movimientos de ratón de los demás y demostrar que la relación servidor-cliente no es tan diferente de las estructuras de poder.
Hello process, de Ameyric Mansoux y Marloes de Valk (GOTO10) demuestra la paradoja del sistema abierto de un ordenador que emplea software libre en el que la complejidad de los procesos es completamente incomprensible. Chatroom,de Jeff Gompertz y Caen Botto (Universomente) es una instalación que usa el input de la captura del vídeo chat de los participantes para crear un salón de espejos. After The Net también presenta Cybernetics Revisited, una retrospectiva del trabajo de José Antonio Orts que incluye un trabajo multidisciplinar que incorpora sonido, tecnología y objetos que abarca desde los primeros ochenta hasta la actualidad e incluye algunos presentados por primera vez.

Juntos, los trabajos de la exposición exploran algunas de las raíces históricas de los sistemas tecnológicos abiertos en relación con la ética y la práctica artística y reactiva algunas de las paradojas iniciales.
